Are You Tolerating or Thriving?
I needed a new pair of running shoes so I purchased a pair last month. During the 4 weeks that I have owned them, I’ve developed a very sore calf muscle, an aching hip and the issues in my knee and hamstring have gotten way worse. What’s interesting is that I had all of these issues after the first week of running in them. Yet, I chose to suffer through and justified my suffering in the following ways:
1. It will get better ~ I just need to work them in
2. It’s cold out ~ maybe I didn’t warm up enough before running
3. Is there something wrong with the shoes? Nah, they’re expensive shoes so there must be something wrong with me and the way I am running.
4. Because they are expensive running shoes and I can’t return them, I’ll just have to suck it up and live with it until I wear them out or maybe I’ll just have to run less and find another form of exercise that I love as much.
WHAT?! That’s absurd, right?
This morning it dawned on me that I didn’t have to choose between not running and running in shoes that hurt me. I simply had to choose to stop tolerating the pain. Instead of suffering, I put on my old running shoes and ran my 4 miles, pain free. Interesting.
Solutions over Suffering
While I was running, I couldn’t help but see the bigger picture, “Where else in our lives do we spend energy justifying or tolerating when we could be using that same energy to create a simple solution, end our suffering and thrive?“
Do you love your job or are you justifying the suffering for a paycheck or future opportunity? Are you thriving in your personal relationships or are you justifying why they are the way they are and creating habits that help you survive them? Do you feel great in your body or are you tolerating symptoms and putting on another layer to cover the heavy parts? If any of these are true for you, stop and ask yourself, “ why am I still choosing to suffer?” If your answer is another justification, consider looking deeper.
If your answer is, “it’s just easier to suffer than to take the effort to change,” consider that you are already making a huge effort to tolerate the suffering. How much more effort could it take to thrive especially if you knew how? Many of us have been taught to believe that change has to be massive to be worth it but what if the opposite were true? Even a small change like swapping out running shoes created massive relief.
See Things Differently
Issues, problems and symptoms are all just invitations to raise our consciousness, challenge our habits, and consider new ways of doing things. We are not broken, bad or wrong because we admit to them. We just need to see them differently. As Einstein once said, “”We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”
I am reminded that we are here on this planet for one conscious life and instead of continuing to justify, tolerate or suffer, I invite you to break your habits and choose to thrive! To help you get started, I am offering a free, no strings attached coaching session to anyone who would like one. You can thank my very painful running shoes for the inspiration for this gift!
In good health and happiness ~ here’s to an amazing year!
